Harnessing Sorghum Landraces to Breed High-Yielding, Grain Mold-Tolerant Cultivars With High Protein for Drought-Prone Environments

چکیده

Intermittent drought and an incidence of grain mold disease are the two major constraints affecting sorghum production productivity. The study aimed at developing drought-tolerant varieties possessing a high protein content tolerance to with stable performance using additive main effects multiplicative interaction (AMMI) genotype × environment (GGE) biplot methods. Systematic hybridization among 11 superior landraces resulted in subsequent pedigree-based breeding selection from 2010 2015 evolved 19 promising grains such as white, yellow, brown pericarp grains. These were evaluated for their adaptability stability yield 13 rainfed environments three hot spot environments. A variety yellow PYPS 2 (3,698 kg/ha; 14.52% protein; 10.70 mg/100 g Fe) was identified by both AMMI GGE analyses. Four mega-environments fodder yield. Sorghum 2, 4, 8, highly E2 low incidence. Besides meeting nutritional demand smallholder farmers under dryland conditions, these suitable enhancing productivity present climate change scenario.

Selection indices to identify drought-tolerant grain sorghum cultivars.

Twenty-five cultivars of grain sorghum [Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench] were examined under both drought stress and normal conditions in 4 experiments. In each condition, genotypes were evaluated in a factorial experiment using a randomized complete block design with 3 replications. Eight drought tolerance indices including stability tolerance index, mean productivity (MP), geometric MP, harmonic ...

Breeding Grain Mold Resistant Sorghum Cultivars

Sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is the fifth important cereal crop after wheat (Triticum aestivum L.), maize (Zea mays L.), rice (Oryza sativa L.), and barley (Hordeum vulgare L.) in the world. It is cultivated in about 46 million ha with a total production of 62 million t (FAO 1998). Asia and Africa account 86% of the total area under sorghum, but their contribution towards total product...

sckaroun 701 maize hybrid with high grain yield and tolerant to drought stress

in order to obtain high yielded and tolerant to drought stress maize hybrid a breeding program was started in safiabad agricultural research center in the 1999 and a few s6 lines attained in 2005. then interactive components were created and evaluated in the preliminary and semi-finals experiment during two consecutive years. after preliminary studies, nine hybrids were selected which they were...

Breeding high-yielding drought-tolerant rice: genetic variations and conventional and molecular approaches

The increased occurrence and severity of drought stress have led to a high yield decline in rice in recent years in drought-affected areas. Drought research at the International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) over the past decade has concentrated on direct selection for grain yield under drought. This approach has led to the successful development and release of 17 high-yielding drought-toleran...

Registration of Drought-Tolerant, Rust-Resistant, High-Yielding Pinto Bean Germplasm Line CO46348

120 Journal of Plant Registrations, Vol 2, No. 2, May 2008 Drought stress reduces dry bean seed yield in most production regions worldwide (White and Singh, 1991). The release of pinto bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) germplasm CO46348 (Reg. No. GP-275, PI 651500) will provide plant breeders with drought-tolerant, pinto bean germplasm that takes advantage of a full growing season (95–98 d) and has ...
